Of the six fragrances released in 2019, and five of them are flankers, the newest male creation for Dolce&Gabbana is “K.” 

Nearly everything about it is similar…a similar scent, similar note composition, similar bottle, and similarly GOOD! In a surprising launch, similar is not always a bad thing.

This fragrance seems to unintentionally take these likable features from other colognes and make it work. It’s not a copy, but nearly collaboration. 

Many reviews suggest the same. “Similar to other fragrances, but taken well.” “Respectable sillage, average projections, and familiar, but pleasantly appealing.” 

According to the brand’s website : 

K by Dolce&Gabbana is a fragrance that captures the essence of a man in his element. He is the king of his everyday life. He follows his own path, cherishing his family, and loved ones above all else. Effortlessly charming, and not afraid to show his vitality, he remains true to his roots, respecting tradition while embracing modernity.


The simple tall, upright, rectangular bottle is similar to Yves St. Laurent’s Y. However, its gold crown cap with inlays of blue adds unique character, fitting for the scent’s name. Available in sizes of 3.4 oz. (100mL) and 1.7 oz. (50mL).  


The box is deep ocean blue with a gold outline…similar to Versace’s Dylan Blue. Center-inscribed is the crown design and the maker’s name.


Gold embodies the lavish wealth and blue for masculinity and ruling stature. 


Eau de Toilette (EDT)


Top notes of citruses are similar to Dior’s Sauvage, but a twist of juniper berries rises to the top. The pimento essence is the difference-maker among the heart…rare and captivating to make you warmly enjoy it.

Finally, the bases notes of patchouli, vetiver, and cedarwood allow a smooth transition to earthy tones, yet similar to Dolce&Gabbana’s own The One Gentleman.


Additional, complementary products are the aftershave balm, aftershave lotion, shower gel, and deodorant. Here, a man can enhance the same aroma throughout by layering and moisturizing. 


Italian influencer, model, author, designer Mariano Di Vaio is the face of the fragrance. Not only is he leading his entrepreneurial business, but he is also the head of his household as a husband and father of three. Another king of everyday modern life, in business and family.

For those of you that are as cultured in fragrance as us at The Perfume Times, we rarely determine there is a designer or design group that we haven’t discovered. But, so is the case about a label that has taken a bit of the industry by storm. And we’re not talking about sales of a few hundred units, but rather, sales in the thousands. The brand? Claude Marsal.

After doing some investigative research, The Perfume Times has unwrapped some details about Claude Marsal. It is a design group that specializes in high-end, affordable luxury Eau de Parfums for both women and men, body creams for women, and aftershaves for men. All made in France; the label is particularly noteworthy of the 24% pure fragrance oils in the parfums.

Of the current nine Eau de Parfums for men, La Melodie is by far and away the best seller, according to Claude Marsal. We obtained a bottle and distributed some sample scents among some of our office personnel. The results…”Wow!,” “Amazing,” and “Oooh.” Needless to say, it was overwhelming. Both men and women loved this men’s fragrance!

La Melodie for Men Review


The bottle is translucent containing the slightly olive-colored fragrance. The look is high-end, classy, and sophisticated. Its dimensions of 2” x 2” is the perfect size for a masculine bottle that sits well atop one’s dresser or armoire. Claude Marsal Le Melodie and Eau de Parfum Pour Homme are tastefully labeled across its front. In just one size, 3.4 ounces (100 mL), it is the perfect amount to enjoy from home or while traveling.


According to the website, www.claudemarsal.com, the fragrance retails for USD 250.00, and the complementary aftershave is USD 60.00. Considering most of the recent niche fragrances are priced at $300.00 or more, we find this amount to be a tremendous value for its nearly unparalleled quality. Besides the company website, it is available at fine fragrance retailers throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Each of the men’s fragrance boxes is black (to highlight its strength and power) with different colored trims to identify with the scents. La Melodie is adorned with a rich brown tone that signifies its warm, spicy scent.

“La Melodie” belongs to the aromatic and spicy fragrance family. Its overture is aromatics notes, followed by spicy notes. Balsamic and explosive whiskey notes are the grand finale that unfolds the entire body of the perfume.

The perfume opens with Mandarin, Grapefruit and Sea Notes.
It continues to the foundation of luxurious Jasmine and Bay Leaf.
The last touch of the perfume is Oakmoss, Guaiac Wood, Ambergris, Patchouli, and explosive Whiskey.

We think this is a great versatile scent that can be worn to the office or the construction site, and it could be worn for that evening event. It is, in fact, masculine and rich, but certainly not overpowering. Additionally, the sillage is enough to get noticed but short of emptying the elevator into the staircase. Finally, the tenacity of an Eau de Parfum with the rare 24% fragrance oil! Will allow him to appreciate it for the length of the day. Our vote is this is a must-have for nearly every man!

This week’s perfume review has a little shock, double take, and a, “What does it say?” when noticing Tom Ford’s recent 2018 launch. Albeit controversial, its name does grab your attention and it definitely has caused quite a bit of buzz. Remember the phrase, “Good publicity. Bad publicity. It’s all publicity.” Well, that certainly applies here because many people are discussing it.

His new fragrance is called “Fucking Fabulous.” Some will agree the name is tasteless. Others will agree the name is shameless. Some will agree the name is even egotistical. But most should agree the scent is Ford’s newest masterpiece.

Fucking Fabulous Review


As with the other bottles of Tom Ford’s Private Blend collection, this bottle is simplistically square with a round knob top. Also simple, is the label that adorns the front. (This reminds us of the Gucci Bloom collection’s simple square label which comes off as not much more than a sticker.) The all-black container has an unusual option of just two sizes, 1.7 ounces (50mL) and 8.5 ounces (250mL).


The modest 1.7 oz. has a suggested price of $320 ($188.24/ounce), while the rare, large 8.5 oz. retails for $804 (and a considerably less $94.59/ounce). You can purchase each directly from Tom Ford online and in-store, as well as several high-end department stores.


The box matches the bottle to a tee. A square, black box with a white label…just large enough to fit its bottle.  


Black and white are used because they are genderless, and this is another unisex fragrance to hit the market. In addition, we believe the idea is actually “colorless” as in no rose pink nor any blue masculine fresh.


Eau de Parfum (EDP)


A courageous blend of bitter almond oil, leather, tonka bean, orris root, cashmeran, and clary sage oil. It’s not spicy, but rather earthy. It’s not woody, but rather oriental. It’s a special blend of expression…not only in name, but more so in scent.

Although this was introduced in mid-2018, we think this scent is perfect for the upcoming fall season. Just as we will pack up our light summer colors for more earthy browns, distinctive greys, darker reds, deeper greens, and classy black attire, so too will this scent compliment our wardrobe. However we dress, we want to look luxurious…and smell f*cking fabulous!

Gabrielle “Coco Chanel” was once quoted as saying, “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

In fashion, being different means being trendy, re-interpreting the classics, or even igniting a revolution, but certainly not following the mainstream look. In the beauty industry (that which fragrance is included), being different is new ingredients, more performance, or evolutionary scents.

However, Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge is taking a gamble on the new 2018 Line Les Eaux de Chanel. Three fragrances constitute the collection, and all three are simplistic, common, and even similar (not different) to other scents already on the market.

Each of them is marketed as unisex Eau de Toilettes. All of them have a minimalist-inspired bottle of thin glass that comes off as a cost-saving expense.

The one difference in this line compared to other Chanel perfumes and colognes is the celebration of Gabrielle “Coco Chanel” and her beginnings. Inspired by the three cities of Deauville, Biarritz, and Venise, these locations are critical to the history of the empire of Chanel.

Line Les Eaux de Chanel

The first fragrance is Paris – Deauville


In 1913, Chanel opened her first fashion boutique in Deauville.


“A lively, naturally radiant freshness” that incorporates green basil with Sicilian Orange to produce an aromatic and citrus scent.


Paris – Biarritz is the second of the three fragrances


Biarritz is a seaside city where Chanel drew international clientele, mainly from an adjacent casino, to her first couture house in 1915.


Sicilian mandarin and lily of the valley create a refreshing scent that reminds us of the sea and fresh air among it.


The third fragrance is Paris – Venise


1920 becomes a turning point for Chanel’s fashion inspiration as she discovered Byzantine and Baroque art.


As a fresh and oriental fragrance, warm notes of vanilla and tonka bean interact with fresh neroli.


Instead of being different, these three fragrances are following the already produced unisex Eau de Toilette’s of Bel Respiro and Boy Chanel, and even the ladies Chanel No. 5 L’Eau. These, too, are marketed as fresh and light and all launched in 2016.

The last highly effective unisex fragrance was CK One, and it did (and still does) very well. Is it irreplaceable? NO.

What was uncommon 10 years ago, is common (and not different) in 2018. As for Les Eaux de Chanel, time will tell. A risky introduction, but Chanel is Chanel.
